Lipoic Acid Treatment for Symptomatic Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy: A Promising Solution?

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a type of nerve damage that can affect people with diabetes and is caused by high blood sugar levels. In a randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled study, researchers tested the effect of oral LA on symptomatic DPN.

The study included 30 patients with Type 2 diabetes. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one group was given oral LA and the other group was given a placebo. The participants were evaluated at the beginning of the study and after 12 weeks of treatment. The results showed that the group that was given oral LA had a significant improvement in their symptoms compared to the placebo group. The study concluded that oral LA is effective in improving the symptoms of DPN in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Other studies have also reported positive results. For example, a study published in the journal Diabetes Care used ALA to treat DPN in 45 people with Type 2 diabetes and found that LA significantly improved symptoms such as pain, numbness, and tingling.

Another study published in the journal Nutrition & Metabolism also reported promising results for LA as a treatment for DPN.
