Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a common complication of surgery, and a major cause of organ dysfunction, especially in the liver. ALA effects on I/R injury have been studied regarding the effects of LA on I/R injury, and its potential as an effective treatment. ALA can prevent I/R injury by reducing the production of free radicals, scavenging free radicals, and reducing inflammation. LA can also protect cells from damage by activating antioxidant enzymes, inhibiting apoptosis (cell death), and enhancing cell survival.
In animal studies, LA has been found to be effective in reducing I/R injury in the liver, kidneys, and heart.
LA may be an effective treatment for I/R injury. More research is needed to understand its mechanism of action and its potential as a treatment.
