Are there Any New Benefits to Liposomal R-Lipoic Acid Products?

December 15, 2016 Consumer Blog By

We are frequently asked about liposomal lipoic acid products and questioned as to why we who specialize in lipoic acid don’t offer any since they are now flooding the market.

GeroNova Research is a scientifically based company. We are open to adding a liposomal product to our product line but to date I have not seen any evidence that the “alleged” liposomal products are shelf stable nor have I seen any pharmacokinetic (PK) data from any of the producers that indicates there is any advantage of offering either R-Lipoic Acid (RLA) or R-Dihydrolipoic Acid (R-DHLA) in the form of a liposome or “nanosome”.

I have seen only one company that has analyzed the “particle-size” and actually demonstrated to my satisfaction they have produced a liposomal “micro” or “nano”-sized capsule but even this company has failed to provide any stability data. It is known that some products formulated as liposomes are stable even at low temperature for a few days or at most a few weeks. As with all supplements, stability and bioavailability are the key determinants to efficacy.

Most of the products offered on the market as “liposomes” are simple homogenates. Therefore it is currently impossible to say anything that is supported by science about any advantages of offering a higher priced “liposomal” R-Lipoic Acid (RLA) or R-Dihydrolipoic Acid (R-DHLA) over existing dosage forms.

I have even offered to run PK and stability studies for a couple of “liposomal” RLA producers and so far no one has been interested enough to take me up on the offer. Since we have sold over 30 metric tons of RLA products in the last few years, you would think someone would be interested. To me this is an indication producers don’t really want any scientific evidence to support or possibly invalidate these products but would rather rely on slick marketing hype to convince the unknowing public they have a “next generation” or cutting edge, superior product.

I am eager to be proven wrong. If you have seen any of the missing data I referred to above or are interested in working with us to perform the necessary studies, please contact us.
