Most commercial R-Lipoic, aka “R” form is considered the “eutomer” (the biologically superior form) of Alpha Lipoic Acid since it is identical to that produced by the body and has existed as long as life has existed on earth. Research indicates R-Lipoic Acid is responsible for many if not most of the beneficial effects attributed to Lipoic Acid.
Despite the advantages of Lipoic Acid, most commercial Alpha-Lipoic Acid supplements available today are not offered in the optimal form. These less expensive products are a 50/50 mixture of the naturally occurring R-Lipoic and unnatural S-Lipoic. S-Lipoic Acid is a byproduct of achiral chemical synthesis and did not exist prior to 1952. Research indicates S-Lipoic may inhibit the absorption of some of the most essential properties R-Lipoic Acid (see research page).
RS-Lipoic Acid contains 50% unnatural S-Lipoic Acid and suffers lower aqueous solubility; it may lower intestinal absorption compared to the quick acting, highly bio-available salts, Na RALA and K-RALA. R-Lipoic Acid in the common yellow powder form found in commercial capsules readily polymerizes into a sticky insoluble “rubber” when exposed even briefly to high temperatures or moisture. RLA powder pressed into tablets disintegrate poorly and in capsules incompletely dissolves and displays lower overall absorption (see Research page and published studies)
According to Dr. Guido Zimmer; “R- and S- enantiomers of the physiological compound alpha-lipoic acid have been synthesized. The S-enantiomer is not a naturally occurring compound. This part of the racemate, which is present as about a 50% impurity, needs to be eliminated”. (Zimmer et al 1995)

While R-Lipoic Acid is the obvious choice over Alpha-Lipoic Acid, in its “free-acid” yellow powder form, pure R-Lipoic Acid has two major drawbacks: low shelf stability and low bio-availability. R-Lipoic Acid is significantly more expensive than RS-LA but without special processing is prone to polymerization and is incompletely absorbed. In fact, pharmacokinetic data reveal that while RS-Alpha Lipoic Acid has a lower absorption profile than RLA salts, non-stabilized R-Lipoic Acid powder is absorbed to an even lower extent than racemic-LA.
